Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) is an undergraduate level course for ancient medical skills; it takes around 4 years and 6 months to cover the whole course and 1 year (12 months) of internship in modern medicine and traditional Ayurveda. The candidate can apply for BAMS after completing 10+2 with a science stream from any of the authorized boards in India.

Ayurveda is the science of herbs, healing, detoxification, lifestyle, wellness, and disease cure. It is a comprehensive, tested natural science for healing without adverse effects.

The entire BAMS course depends upon three key points:

• Vata
• Pitta
• Kapha

Vata is the subtle energy linked to activity- It is made up of space and air. It controls breathing, blinking, muscle and tissue movement, heart pulse, and all cytoplasmic and cell membrane movements. When vata is balanced, it encourages creativity and adaptability. When vata is out of balance, it causes worry and anxiety. 

Pitta manifests as the body’s metabolic system– Pitta is composition of Fire and Water. Digestion, absorption, assimilation, nutrition, metabolism, and body temperature are all governed by it. Pitta, when balanced, enhances knowledge and intelligence. When pitta is out of balance, it causes rage, resentment, and jealousy. 

Kapha is the energy that builds the body’s structure — Kapha built bones, muscles, tendons — as well as the “glue” that holds the cells together, and it is composed of Earth and Water. Kapha provides water to all bodily areas and systems. It hydrates the skin, lubricates joints, and boosts immunity. In a balanced state, kapha manifests as love, tranquility, and forgiveness. When it is out of balance, it causes attachment, greed, and envy.

The BAMS program is only available at Ayurveda medical colleges affiliated with recognized universities and the Ministry of Ayush. The BAMS course curriculum is the same across the country, with no modifications to the syllabus or curriculum.

“Ayurvedacharya” is a badge affixed before the name of the bachelor degree holder (Dr.). It is similar to a bonus for qualifying. The distinction between Ayurveda and Allopathy

The primary distinction between Ayurveda and Western allopathic medicine is in the healing methods and strategies. This method has saved numerous lives. 

Drugs, on the other hand, frequently weaken the body due to their toxicity. Ayurveda does not concentrate on disease. Rather, Ayurveda holds that all life must be nourished by balanced energy. When there is little stress and the flow of energy within a person is harmonious, the body’s natural defensive systems are stronger and can defend against sickness more easily.

It should be noted that Ayurveda is not a replacement for Western allopathic medicine. Medications or surgery are frequently the most effective ways to treat the illness process or acute conditions. When to apply for BAMS Admission

1. The candidates who are interested in Ayurveda medicine can do the BAMS course just after completing the intermediate.
2. The candidates who are interested in the BAMS course must have completed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology subjects from a recognized Indian board.
3. The candidates who have qualified the NEET exam and got the required cut-off marks can apply for the BAMS course in government or private colleges and institutions offering the BAMS course.
4. All admissions will be made through the NEET UG exam, or if seats are available, the Supreme Court of India or the relevant authorities will make a decision.

BAMS Admission Eligibility Criteria:

NEET UG: A candidate must be qualified for the NTA’s NEET UG.

Age Limit: Candidates should have completed 17 years of age as of December 1 of the admission year.

Educational Qualification: Candidates must have passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English subjects and obtained minimum 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology taken together. Candidates from the SC, ST, or OBC categories must obtain a minimum of 40% in the qualifying examination.

BAMS Admission Criteria

• Candidates must have taken the NEET by NTA entrance exam, which is administered by the Central Government or a state government.
• All admissions will be done through centralized online counselling.

The NTA will create the NEET merit list. The NTA is the sole authorized body in charge of administering the NEET exam and compiling the merit list. Each state has its own merit rank list based on the examination merit list.

BAMS Duration & Curriculum

The whole BAMS course of 5 years and 6 months is divided into three sections: I Profession, II Profession, and III Profession. The course is completed in just 4.5 years, but an additional year should be taken for an internship, which is a compulsory part of the degree.

Profession I, II, III are called professional courses under Professional (1) Ayurvedic, as modern anatomy, physiology, the Ayurvedic Classic Text, and Sanskrit language will be taught. Profession (2) Ayurvedic Classical Text; Social and Preventive Medicine, Ayurvedic Toxicology, Pharmacology and Pharmaceutics; Diagnostic and Clinical Methods Profession (3) Ayurvedic as well as modern aspects of general medicine, gynecology and obstetrics, general surgery, pediatrics, ENT, ophthalmology, panchakarma, and Ayurvedic classic texts Also, one rotatory internship in the clinical department is compulsory.

BAMS Specializations

The Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery Program does not offer any specializations. Every Indian medical college that offers a BAMS course follows the same curriculum. BAMS Fees Structure in India

The fee structure of the BAMS course in Indian colleges varies from private to government colleges. The fee structure also varies as per the facilities and infrastructure offered by the college for better practice. Each state has its own fee structure for BAMS courses. Minimum private college tuition fee:  INR 1,20,000 per year

Maximum private college tuition fee:  INR 6,00,000 per year

BAMS Admission Counselling Process

Ayush Admissions Central Counselling Committee (AACCC), Ministry of Ayush, Govt. of India, New Delhi, conducts online counselling for undergraduate courses (BAMS/BSMS/ BUMS/BHMS).

All India Quota seats allotment of Ayurveda/ Siddha/Unani/Homoeopathy under government/Govt. Aided/Central Universities/National Institutes/Deemed Universities (100%) to the NEET-UG qualified eligible candidates will be offered by AACCC. Since 2019, AACCC has served as the regulating authority.

The allocation of seats for BAMS admission for the academic year 2024–25 is dependent on the candidate’s performance in the National Testing Agency’s NEET (UG)–2024 Examination (NTA).

The AIQ seats come under AACCC-UG Counselling are listed below:

1. 15% All India Quota for UG (BAMS/BSMS/BUMS/BHMS) Seats of Govt./Govt. Aided Institutes of All States and UTs (except Jammu & Kashmir)
2. 100% BAMS Seats of BHU, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh
3. 100% BAMS Seats of ITRA, Jamnagar, Gujarat (except nominated seats)
4. 100% BAMS seats of NIA, Jaipur, Rajasthan (except nominated seats)
5. 100% BHMS seats of NIH, Kolkata, West Bengal (except nominated seats)
6. 100% UG (BAMS/BSMS/BUMS/BHMS) Seats of all Deemed Universities
7. 50% BUMS seats of AMU, Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh
8. 50% BAMS & BHMS seats of NEIA&H, Shillong, Meghalaya.

Furthermore, AACCC, M/o Ayush’s responsibility is limited to allocating seats to participating candidates based on merit and preferences, which begins only after obtaining the summary of qualified candidates from the National Testing Agency.

BAMS Admission to 15% ALL INDIA QUOTA OF GOVT./GOVT-AIDED COLLEGES

• Candidates who passed the NEET (UG)—2024 Examination are eligible. (Except for the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.) The AACCC, M/o Ayush, will conduct four rounds of counselling for admission to 15% of the All India Quota seats under Govt./Govt-Aided Colleges and Institutes through online mode: Round 1, Round 2, 3rd/Mop-Up Round, and Stray Vacancy Round.
• After the completion of the 3rd/Mop-up Round, the Stray Vacancy Round will be held for admission in unoccupied seats (non-reporting/non-joining).
• After completing all rounds of AACCC-UG counselling, no seats will be returned to participating institutes.

BAMS Admission to CENTRAL UNIVERSITIES / NATIONAL INSTITUTES

• All applicants who passed the NEET (UG) – 2024 exam are qualified. (With the exception of J&K Union Territory).
• The AACCC, M/o Ayush will conduct four rounds of counselling for admission in seats under Central Universities and National Institutes via the internet: Round 1, Round 2, 3rd/Mop-Up Round, and Stray Vacancy Round.
• The Stray Vacancy round will be conducted for admission in vacant seats (non-reporting/non-joining) following the completion of the 3rd /Mop-up Round. No seats will be reverted to the participating institute.

BAMS Admission to 100% DEEMED UNIVERSITY

All qualified applicants, including those from the Union Territory of J&K, who have passed the NEET (UG)-2024 are eligible. Counselling will take place in four rounds: Round 1, Round 2, Third/Mop-Up Round, and Stray Vacancy Round.

All four rounds of counselling will be conducted online (Round 1, Round 2, Third/Mop-Up Round, and Stray Vacancy Round).

The list of registered eligible candidates will be forwarded by the AACCC, M/o Ayush, to the respective deemed universities, who will then conduct the stray vacancy round. Only applicants who have registered for AACCC-UG counselling are eligible for Deemed Universities’ Stray Vacancy Round.

The reservation policy of the Central Government is not applicable because all undergraduate seats at Deemed Universities are domicile free. Without NEET BAMS admission 2024-25 is not possible.

Career Options after BAMS

BAMS graduates can apply for teaching positions at prestigious colleges and institutions.
Counsellor– By promoting ayurveda medical practices and treatments, he or she could serve as an ayurvedic counsellor.
Practitioner: Practitioner of medical ayurveda who may also practice Panchkarma He or she must provide medication or give therapy for a variety of human illnesses, diseases, and disorders.
Postgraduate: The most popular option chosen by graduates after completing a BAMS is a postgraduate program.
